Tree is gone

May 7th, 2008, 9:18 pm by acrawford

BY AMY CRAWFORD, 33.10 CONTENT EDITOR

The palm tree has a new home on a ranch out in the county somewhere. The father of one of our reporters came and dug it up and gave it a new home. We’re so thankful. He was a very knowledgeable plant person and gave us some good tips on other items we had growing in the yard.

We did not get anything planted in the hole yet though, but our house guest didn’t notice. She spent most of her time in the backyard enjoying the shade of the ficus and the cool breeze.

We’re open to suggestions though. Perhaps we can have a “find the right plant for this space” contest.

Yuma poets talented

April 28th, 2008, 2:29 pm by acrawford

BY AMY CRAWFORD, 33.10 CONTENT EDITOR

I have to tell you all that Yuma is home to some great writers and budding word smiths. Most of my time has been taken up with getting ready for my mom’s visit on Tuesday. But when I got to work on Sunday, I had a slew of poetry entries ready to go. Some of the poems are quite good. I wish I could share them with you, but alas, you’ll have to wait until Thursday when the online voting starts at

There’s a kitten on the roof

    April 22nd, 2008, 12:13 pm by acrawford

Apparently, our building has been having some AC problems and our gallant facilities department has been working on the problem. While up there today, they discovered the source of the woe — kittens! A mama cat had gotten up on the roof of The Sun’s building and had three wee ones inside the AC unit.

Some folks have wondered how a cat can get on a roof. Well, I’ve always known cats to be good climbers and where there is a will, there is usually a way.

Our own circulation assistant Julie P is saving the kittens. One has already been adopted, but here are some photos of the other two. If you would like to adopt one, please call our circulation department and ask for her. The number is 539-6900.

    Go Green! Come See Us!

April 22nd, 2008, 9:41 am by Adrianne Wagner

    IT’S EARTH DAY!!!

What are YOU doing to promote the 3 R’s??

I am out at the Sustainability Fair at AWC.  There is a lot of great stuff out here.  All businesses and organizations are here telling people who they strive to be Earth-friendly and how they can help YOU become more Earth-friendly.

Of the various businesses and organizations here, off hand I can tell you that the Starlight Solar company, Allied Waste, various school clubs, YCAT, Yuma County, the AWC-NAU library are all intermingled out here amongst the various recycled-art displays, like the piece in this photo Janet Chasse took:

In addition, everyone is wearing GREEN to show support for the “GO GREEN” theme!  It is very encouraging!

There is a slide show looping in front of the library with a few Recycling songs.  I only recognize one artist; Jack Johnson has been singing to me all morning!  It is much better than listening to a coffee pot drip.

All I can say, one hour into the day, is come out and see all of us!  We have great stuff to give away and info to pass on!  Then, you can come and tell me what other businesses and organizations I left off my list.

If you can not make it out, you can always “Go Green” by going to YumaSun.com!

Answer our prayers, steal this tree!

    April 21st, 2008, 5:01 pm by acrawford

Jason and I are working in the yard quite a bit right now before the summer heat sets in. We’ve decided to go with more desert-like landscaping in the front and this means one of the trees must go. Read the rest of this entry »
