In the shadow of New Madrid

Saturday, April 19th, 2008 by acrawford

I grew up in Western Kentucky, about 100-150 miles from the center of the New Madrid Fault zone. Our house was in the obliteration zone, and my family was always prepared for “the big one.” So it’s surprising to me that so many people are generalizing that those in the Midwest are oblivious to the earthquake danger in light of the 5.2 quake that hit Friday. That’s what we call a “hasty generalization.” And it’s unfair to clump us all in one blind boat. (more…)

As I finally got around to working on them. I slept most of yesterday (even though Jason kept prodding me awake) and needed the catchup. So if you want to check out how my Saturday went read on. It’s dog-gone time

Monday, March 31st, 2008 by acrawford

It’s about time the city of Yuma decided we needed a dog park. It’s not like folks haven’t been asking for one for years. Hey city? Remember that survey you all asked folks to fill out a few years ago? Several of my co-workers helped out and all of us voted for a dog park. Let’s make this happen.

In the book nook

Friday, March 21st, 2008 by acrawford

BY AMY CRAWFORD, 33.10 CONTENT EDITOR

It’s not a secret that I love to read. Outside of work, when I have time, I am always looking for something good to read. The problem is there is way too many good things to read out there and I am not made of time.

276 million smackers

Saturday, March 15th, 2008 by acrawford

BY AMY CRAWFORD, 33.10 Editor

Someone won the Powerball and it wasn’t me. Good for them. According to The Associated Press, a single ticket in West Virginia won the $276.3 million moolah. Let’s hope it wasn’t the same dude as last time, Jack Whittaker, who ended up broke.

As usual when I’m dreaming about the lottery, what I would do with all that money crosses my mind. First, I’d hire a lawyer, a financial planner and an accountant. Well, after I’d been picked up off the floor from fainting. I’d want to know how to manage all that money without ending up broke or destitute. I’d probably NOT lead a high-falut’n lifestyle, though a 365-day trip around the world (thanks for the idea Cathy!) wouldn’t be a bad vacation.

We’d probably pay off our debts (mortgage, credit cards, loan sharks, JK!) and knowing me, I’d want to sit on it for a while before splurging. Oops, I ment to say, make some modest investments. Then I’d want to go visit places I’ve always dreamed about: Rome, Italy, France, Hong Kong, Australia, Romania, a few other exotic locales.

Mainly though, I’d donate quite a bit. Restoring the steeple in St. James Anglican Church in Dudley, England, comes to mind. I attended services there at the stone church built sometime in the 1500s. Endowing scholarships at my high school back in Kentucky was something my siblings and I talked about after my father died. Maybe some could go to the 4-H program here in Yuma and back in Kentucky. My church would be getting 10 percent and could pay off its debts (hopefully). Then, there would be all the relatives. Hmm, I could fund my cousin’s dream of Stanford. Maybe that would be enough for the relatives, though my sister and brother could use a start for their kids’ college savings. My mom could use a monthly allowance and my in-laws could retire and do their photo business for fun.

See why I haven’t won the lottery? I admit, I’m not a good money manager. I would give it all away.
